This Women’s History month, I want to shine the light on women from the smaller countries and islands that don’t always receive as much global recognition as they deserve.
What better way to kick it off than with a woman from my beloved home, Jamaica. It might be a small island but everything about Jamaica and Jamaicans is big! We have this joke that's based on the KFC big deal meal in Jamaica, where we say “Jamaica is a big deal and if you think otherwise you are a small fry and side order” (it is from a meme I recommend you to go check out for a good laugh).
So let’s jump into talking about one of the biggest big deals out in Jamaica– Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Shelly-Ann was once known as the fastest woman in the world but is now known as the third-fastest woman of all time and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. As a fellow Jamaican native, I find a deep connection with her, sharing similar roots and upbringing. The indomitable drive and determination instilled in both of us by our families reflect the Jamaican spirit – "likkle bit, but tallawah." I admire the strength and resilience she exhibits on and off the track. Despite reigning at the top for years, she embraced a moment of not clinching the gold medalist spot as an opportunity to push forward, illustrating her unwavering commitment to success. She always shoots for the stars and aims for the moon. Beyond her athletic prowess, Shelly-Ann's sportsmanship shines through, particularly during challenging times like the Olympics when fans and the media sought to pit her against competitors like Sha'Carri. Shelly-Ann is always welcoming and encouraging to her competitors. What truly captivates me is Shelly-Ann's remarkable duality. On the track, she charges up with a serious focus, but off it, she seamlessly transitions into her roles as a mother, wife, and a vibrant teammate and friend. She also advocates for Black women globally, and as a boss babe has major partnerships with brands like Richard Millie. Shelly-Ann is the epitome of well-roundedness and she deserves all of her flowers.
